Kitchen Superheroes

If it’s possible to put love into food – and you know I believe that it is – is it also possible to infuse the things we eat with superhero powers? With aprons like these, I think the answer is a victorious YES!

Created and sold by Bethany Sew-and-Sew, these superhero aprons are the very best combination of practical and fatastical! It’s all the fun of a costume with the added bonus of function. Plus, kitchen role play can be so much fun! A whole Justice League of designs are available, including the Wonder Woman, Batgirl, and Supergirl designs shown above. The aprons are 100% cotton, most are machine washable, and the prices range from $45-50. Like a good meal, the aprons are custom made by hand by Bethany. And she’s just as cute as the aprons.

Here she is now…

… and here are her answers to my questions about the inspiration for her totally kickass aprons.

What inspired you to make the superhero aprons?
My husband is a comic book artist –he does the art for Screamland, and both writes and draws Rigby the Barbarian – so I found myself going to comic book conventions. I didn’t want to just stand around, so I decided to have my own booth. At the time, I needed an apron, so I made the apron I wanted to wear – Wonder Woman – and hoped for the best. The aprons went over well, and requests for other specific characters began to come in, so I’ve just kept adding to my collection.

What’s your favorite thing to cook?
I don’t really have a favorite, but I like to cook with fresh vegetables from our local city market. I generally like one-pot dishes that allow me to keep throwing in the things I love until it’s perfect. My favorite thing to eat is ice cream, but I’m trying really hard to be good, so I don’t eat very much of it anymore. And if I do I try to put just a scoop of it in a bowl with a whole bunch of fruit!

If you could dine with any superhero, who would it be?
Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, but don’t tell my husband.

See all of Bethany’s character aprons here – kids’s and men’s versions are available, too, so the whole family can get in on the cooking and butt-kicking! I kinda want to collect them all…

I’ve been Batman for Halloween (and many other non-Halloween days) more than I can count/care to admit. My dog was Batman last year with me. That whole being immortal and still a super hero thing is fantastic.

This nice lady is my new hero! Super creative! Getting out that rainy day money! Thanks Mel!

I’m really lusting after the Wonder Woman design, I have to admit.

Second wedding anniversary is coming up and the theme is cotton. I’m not sure how I don’t get her this, but she doesn’t share my love of comic books. I’m a little torn.

I think even a girl who’s lukewarm on comics and superheroes in general would be THRILLED to be considered Wonder Woman or Supergirl. I say go for it!

Oh, as soon as I saw it I knew I’d get one. My sister commented that it was an awesome/suicidal idea, which yeah, how do you not go with that? The only question is which one…
