Before Melissa and Dallas were Whole9Life, they were CrossFit 603 with the brilliant tagline, Our fun is not fun. Apparently, they were strolling through old computer files last night, ’cause this morning they tweeted this and linked here:
Their tagline was somewhat prophetic because when I checked the CrossFit Austin WOD this morning, I saw the perfect definition of ‘not fun’: a 2-mile...

There were many reasons for today’s workout to be less than awesome:
I almost turned off the alarm and went back to sleep.
My eating schedule was all kinds of jacked up for two days.
I’m fighting a cold.
My attitude was hovering halfway down the steps to the basement.
full clean to overhead, 65#
My reps: 15
:30 hollow hold and/or...

Travel to an unfamiliar place is one of my favorite things! But travel for work never feels like an adventure – instead, it seems like forced isolation, and I always feel quite lonely when the corporate overlords send me to another office for a few days.
But so far, this trip has been pretty low impact, and I get to head home late this afternoon, so I’ve been trying to be (mostly) positive....

Our crazy summer of cookbook production is quickly winding down. We now have just 20 days until our cookbook deadline – and a few days ago, while doing photo editing, we hit a snag! Dave and I couldn’t agree on which mayo photo to use.
In the general scheme of things, this surely seems like a minor dispute. But decisions must be made! Files must be processed! Spreadsheets must be completed! Ts must...

What’s that saying about the best-laid schemes of mice and men? Like the rest of the paleo foodies in our healthy corner of the blogosphere, I was pretty excited when my copy of Paleo Comfort Foods showed up in the mailbox. Charles and Jules, the authors, are Good People™ and Robb Wolf’s glowing foreword had me fired up to try their recipes.
But then the corporate overlords intervened.

One of my favorite things about CrossFit Austin is the care that Coach Wes puts into his programming. I never have to worry about whether I’m doing enough conditioning or lifting heavy things often enough. All I have to do is show up and trust the WODs. Wes looks out for us with a balance between WODs that ground us down and recovery days that lift us back up. Since we had our asses handed to us by...

You’re an adult, so by now you’ve probably established a pretty good habit of washing your hands after using the restroom, before eating, and before cooking. Cookbook production has left my own hands a bit dry right now – so much washing of produce and my hands before and during each recipe. The other day I endured a brutal reminder of why it’s important to wash our hands after...

On September 17, more than 970 CrossFit affiliates and 10,000 individual athletes will participate in Fight Gone Bad 6 to raise funds for Special Operations Warrior Foundation, CrossFit Kids, and Camp Patriot. Visit the Fight Gone Bad 6 site to learn more and sponsor an athlete.
This morning, around 2:00 a.m. on my way to the bathroom, I checked my iPhone to see this morning’s WOD. I almost jolted...

In my quest for lean superhero-ness, I tackle the Strength Training Workout posted by Coach Wes every Tuesday at CrossFit Austin.
I need to get up, get showered, and get a move on. Today is our second-to-last photo shoot for the soon-to-be cookbook – Well Fed: Paleo Recipes For People Who Love To Eat. We got four beauties yesterday (three totally new recipes and one old favorite that’s been...

It’s hormone-poisoning week once again, so my appetite and my hormones are all over the place. Inspired by another food blogger’s experiment with savory almond butter, I got to wondering… what would happen if I made almond butter seasoned with the spices from my favorite spiced nut recipe?
The answer: Danger, Will Robinson! Its salty-sweet nuttiness means it’s the answer to the...

[NOTE: I love that the first line of the warmup above looks like it says "lap around the pork." That would be an awesome way to start a WOD.]
Friday was D-Day, and it was pretty kickass. I had my proverbial socks appropriately rocked off by Mr. Kid Rock and The Twisted Brown Trucker Band, stayed up late, ate paleo snacks in the car, enjoyed half a cherry-and-cheese kolache, went swimming in the hotel...
