On Wednesdays, our Farmhouse Delivery basket arrives. I have to admit, I’m not a fan of the process of unpacking, bagging, and adding the veggies to our inventory in the fridge. Somehow I always forget it’s coming, and instead of being excited to see it, I usually groan: Ugh! The Farmhouse is here. Like it’s the worst news in the world. Like I’m Eeyore. Like the last drops of Sunshine Sauce had just been licked out of the jar.
Which is ridiculous because I love Farmhouse Delivery, and I’m always so happy to have the veg around for cooking later.
Today, we received the tiniest, freshest, most delicate, first-of-the-season organic strawberries… two beefy sweet potatoes… some purple-and-green flat-leaf kale… gorgeous cauliflower that will soon give up its florets for rice… sweet, tender butter lettuce… and carrots.
Once upon a time…
… carrot seeds were planted at an urban farm in Austin, Texas. The drought broke and the sky poured cooling rain, then the sun came out and warmed the earth. The carrots sent their roots down for nutrients and their leaves up for sunshine. Soon the carrots had grown into vibrant orange vegetables that would sustain the good people of the neighborhood. The bunch of carrots were lovingly pulled from the ground and placed in a basket for delivery. Because the carrots were organic — not homogenized and modernized — they, like people, came in various shapes and sizes, including the teeniest, tiniest, runt-of-the-litter carrot anyone had ever seen. But all of the carrots, big and small, had a purpose to serve.
The carrots made their way to their final destination in a basket with other fruits and vegetables from neighboring farms. When all of the produce had been washed and wrapped and stored for safe keeping by the mostly benevolent princess who received the basket, that brave little carrot fulfilled its destiny…
