Strength Wednesday – 05/17/12 (w/ Bonus Resistance)

In my quest for lean superhero-ness, I’m following the Wendler 5/3/1 strength training program. Twice a week, Dave and I are hitting the craptastic gym in our Converse to lift heavy and crank through a mini-metcon. Well, that was unpleasant. Sometimes, I just don’t want to. I look at the barbell, and I know it’s going to be heavy, and I just don’t want to pick it up. Yesterday was... read more

Well Fed — Now on Kindle

Before we jump into the  good news, admit it: You are totally jealous of my mad Photoshop skillz. I mean, look at that totally awesome low-rent graphic up there. You guys, it might be time for me to suck it up and actually learn how to use Photoshop properly. A class, a book, a tutor… something. I am so bad at it. So. Bad. sigh… But on to the good news! Well Fed is now available on the... read more

Books & Barley Swine: My Birthday in Photos

Seriously, I thought my birthday was a week ago, then I looked at the calendar and realized it’s been two weeks. This is my life right now: time disappears. But stories about books and food are always fun, right? Even when they’re two weeks late. And I have some very sexy books and food to share. So… here are snaps and stories from my birthday celebration on Tuesday, May 1 when I turned... read more

Let’s Get Verklempt: Gevalia BeanChat

Sometimes, when I’m sitting in my office in the morning, ready to apply fingertips to keyboard, I wish that I could simply sit down with you instead. We’d have a nice hot cuppa joe (decaf for me) and talk about whatever pops into our noggins. Wouldn’t that be fun? On Thursday morning, we get the next best thing. Join me on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. EST for BeanChat — it’s a live... read more

Smile, Smile, Smile

I have a thing about my teeth. I had braces when I was 12, and since then, I’ve been a little distracted by keeping my chompers as white as possible and free of embarrassing bits of food stuck between them. I use whitening toothpaste and sometimes resort to Crest Whitestrips. I have a pretty badass rotating-head Oral-B toothbrush — and most meals end with me baring my teeth at Dave like a hyena... read more

Rants & Raves – 05/12/12

Oh, the webbernet! It gets me all riled up with dire news and mainstream idiocy, then blammo! it hits me with something so awesome, it must be shared. Dear friends, welcome to this week’s collection of Rants & Raves. Hmmm… Both of these articles stirred up an emotional response in me. They provoked neither a rant nor a rave, but definitely made me think. Are Most People in Denial About... read more

Vietnamese Chicken Salad

One of my favorite word nerd activities is making up new words. Where would we all be without frexcitement, fouscous, opkeptical, and now: jicamadas. What the devil is an jicamada? A tostada made of jicama, of course. However… my pal Tim Huntley at My Athletic Life gave me an SEO 101 class today, and if I want new readers to find my recipes, I need to give the recipes titles that regular people can... read more

Strength Thursday – 05/10/12 (W/ Bonus Spiciness)

In my quest for lean superhero-ness, I’m following the Wendler 5/3/1 strength training program. Twice a week, Dave and I are hitting the craptastic gym in our Converse to lift heavy and crank through a mini-metcon. Feelin’ Spicy. D’you ever wake up feelin’ spicy? Like your attitude has just the right amount of salt and (cayenne) pepper to power you through your day? That’s... read more

Great Running Song: Cruel To Be Kind

Last night Dave and I went to see Nick Lowe at La Zona Rosa here in Austin. I was mostly excited to see him because I can’t remember a time when I didn’t love the song Cruel To Be Kind. It was released in 1979, when I was 11. Those were my roller skating glory days when I spend every Saturday and Sunday afternoon at Willow Lake Skating Rink. I can only imagine that I took many laps around the... read more

Strength Monday – 05/07/12 (w/ Bonus Cute Shorts)

In my quest for lean superhero-ness, I’m following the Wendler 5/3/1 strength training program. Twice a week, Dave and I are hitting the craptastic gym in our Converse to lift heavy and crank through a mini-metcon. I like these shorts. The craptastic gym invites me to be lazy about my appearance. Usually, no on is there, and if there are a few other souls in that sweaty, stinky box, they’re... read more

News Update and Thank You

I’m coming off a few solid days of ass-in-chair, fingers-on-keyboard  — hence my new commitment to Get Up, Stand Up. I’ve been editing and writing for projects that have been sorta top secret until now. It’s finally OK for me to talk about them, so I can share the news with all of you you! The next year and a half is going to be spent cranking out lots o’ words from this very... read more
