All hail the green, the orange, the red, and the white! Sunday, June 17 is National Eat Your Vegetables Day!
And it’s much friendlier and more relevant to us than, say, National Doughnut Day which is the first Friday in June. I’d also like to point out that June 16 is both National Fudge Day and Fresh Veggies Day, so do with that information what you will.
We are here to talk about National...

A few weeks ago, I shared all the personal reasons I thought you should pre-order It Starts With Food, the must-have new book from Melissa and Dallas Hartwig, founders of the Whole30. Today, I want to tell you the concrete, have-nothing-to-do-with-the-fact-that-I-adore-them reasons you should absolutely, 100% read this book if you’re interested in having your best life possible.
I know! That’s...

I was going to share this video with you in my Rants & Raves this weekend, but I liked it so much, I decided to cough it up now. The soundtrack is a little over the top, and the pacing is drawn out for maximum heart-string tugging, but dang it! It worked. I was genuinely moved and inspired by this story.
Although I strive to curb my whining, and I actively work on managing my negative feeling about it,...

My 10 Favorite “No Equipment, No Excuses” Workouts
Even I, hater of heat and summer months, sometimes just want to get outside and move around… no equipment, no fuss… just me, my iPod, a bottle of water, and my sweat. The workouts listed below all clock in at 10 to 20 minutes and include some of my favorite body weight movements. They can be done just about anywhere, indoors or...

This morning, I hit the Town Lake Trail for an hour of deep breathing and talking to myself. It was wholly rejuvenating, and when I came home, I sautéed up a Hot Plate of collard greens, sweet potatoes, and chicken breast. While I ate, I scribbled in my journal: “Got the snakes out of my brain.”
In no particular order, here are my…

Oh, the webbernet! It gets me all riled up with dire news and mainstream idiocy, then blammo! it hits me with something so awesome, it must be shared. Beautiful people, welcome to this week’s collection of Rants & Raves.
I’m light on the bad news today – mostly this stuff is silly and annoying, but not too grim. Except for the Weight Watchers thing, which makes me ranty and stabby...

Sometimes, when I’m hard at work typing and thinking, or cooking, or just generally trying to get ahead in the world, I take a break to see what Smudge is up to.
This just in: Recipe testing has proven too demanding for Smudge and she has taken refuge in the re-usable grocery bags from our local HEB. I was chopping, stirring, and generally making a mess of the kitchen when I noticed her — sound asleep...

Just as soon as I’m finished typing this, I’m going to do the final test on a cole slaw recipe for Living Paleo For Dummies — and I’m somewhat appalled to admit that I have such sucky knife skills, I decided I needed some remedial help to prep the cabbage. I found this video, which I thought was pretty good — and has a completely mystifying, dorky ending that’s worth checking...

When Dave and I were sweating the details of Well Fed last summer — both literally, while taking photos in the 100+ degree temps of Austin and figuratively, wondering if Well Fed would be a success — he warned me that someday, we’d forget all the hard parts and want to do it again. He was right! We’re going to do it again.
The follow up to Well Fed will probably hit the world in the fall...

In my quest for lean superhero-ness, I’m following the Wendler 5/3/1 strength training program. Twice a week, Dave and I are hitting the craptastic gym in our Converse to lift heavy and crank through a mini-metcon.
Twelve weeks of uninterrupted normal.
The beach in Tulum, Mexico was breathtaking and ever-so-relaxing. Silky white sand, turquoise water, fresh air. I loved the barefootedness and the...

Congratulations to Stacey, the dynamo mom who’s half of the team behind The Paleo Parents web site and kids’ cookbook Eat Like a Dinosaur. She’s the star of a pretty sweet paleo write-up in Women’s World magazine. Yes, this article starts out focusing on the weight loss aspects of making the switch to paleo, but along the way, it includes excellent meal suggestions...
