Fasten your seatbelts, because I’m about to tell you a story that will eventually weave together Thanksgiving; Elvis; a restaurant in Venice, California; Sunbutter; and indoor grilling.
Ready? Let’s begin.
Thanksgiving has been my favorite holiday since I was old enough to start naming things as favorites. According to family lore, I once protested that we couldn’t start Thanksgiving...

I promise every post isn’t going to be about the upcoming release of Well Fed 2: More Paleo Recipes For People Who Love To Eat, but it’s kind of my job to blab about it right now.
Yesterday, I told you about the photos and the recipes. Today I’m giving you one you can try for yourself!
The last time I placed an order for ground beef and steaks from TX Bar Organics, those friendly, sneaky...

As I mentioned in this post from back in May, I ate a lot (A LOT!) of the skinless Balkan sausages called ćevapčići while we journeyed through Slovenia, Croatia, and Bosnia-Herzegovina. The ćevapčići were a really tasty way to get a protein infusion to balance the wine, beer, and kremšnita (ahem) that I was enjoying in a regular basis.
Throughout our travels, I ate ćevapčići about 8 times, and...

In college, I had a 100% Italian-American boyfriend, and I was partially adopted by his very traditional family. His mom was about 4’10″ and a spitfire, and every week, she had a cooking schedule. A certain day of the week meant soup, another day was always a roast, and Sunday was spaghetti and meatballs. She’d make the sauce on Saturday afternoon so it could simmer until after mass on...

Sure, you can celebrate Valentine’s Day with something chocolatey (like dairy-free mousse or grain-free fudge bombs) — and I 100% approve. But you can also show the truest form of love with some badass beef and vegetables. Nothing, and I mean nothing, says I adore you more definitively than a meal that’s delicious and healthy. (These adorbs valentine cards from Nom Nom Paleo are a close...

Dave and I enjoyed many fine meals while we were at the Ancestral Healthy Symposium: among them were Animal with our paleo foodie friends and 26 Beach in Venice, on the recommendation of Melissa & Dallas of Whole9Life. (If you live near 26 Beach, they now offer online ordering!)
To get to Venice, we rented bikes in Santa Monica and rode along the beach. What a day! The sky was brilliant blue and the...

It’s been said that diamonds are a girl’s best friend.
I say diamonds are a girl’s (and boy’s) best friend when they’re made out of meat!
I think I was really missing my family last week, ’cause I dug into some Lebanese family favorites. I had cravings for tahini dressing… and turned my spinach into Lemony Spinach… and I transformed ground lamb in Kibbeh...

Most of the time, cooking and eating is a social and creative outlet for me. Although I complain (sometimes a lot) about the scourge of making dinner, there is something uniquely satisfying about putting a plate in front of another human and saying, in essence, “I made this for you.”
But sometimes, I get to cook just for me. Those meals often feature things that make Dave wrinkle his nose:...

What could be more comforting on a cold winter evening than ground beef and gravy topped with mashed potatoes? I’ll tell you what: flavorful ground beef topped with creamy mashed cauliflower!
Cottage pie is a traditionally British or Irish dish made from beef, and it’s a kissin’ cousin to shepherd’s pie, which is made with lamb. The term ‘cottage pie’ has been around...

I la-la-love the flavor palette of this time of year: lots of cinnamon and nutmeg, cranberries, sweet potatoes… everything is earthy and warm and makes me want to curl up under a blankie with a cup of tea.
But we superheroes-in-training can only afford to do that on rare occasions. The rest of the time, we need foods with bright colors and bright flavors that get us fired up to lift heavy things,...

I really wanted a cute name for these meatballs.
I tried for, like, 10 minutes to come up with a workable play on caraway seeds. Get Carried-Away Seed Meatballs? I’m Caraway’d Meatballs? Caraway’d Away Balls? Dave grimaced.
His contribution: “Czech Out My Balls?”
And that is how we settled on the not-very-creative, but accurately-descriptive and patently-inoffensive...
