My New Tattoo: Story In Photos

May 1 was my birthday, and I celebrated the way any mature, responsible, 45-year-old woman might: I decided to get a new tattoo while on vacation in Prague. And then I sweet-talked Dave into joining me. Here are the snaps from the day we got matching star tattoos to celebrate aging as loudly and inappropriately as possible. We chose Tribo, based on recommendations from Reddit. The shop was booked, but... read more

Prague Postcards: Seen On The Street

When you look at photos on my blog, and they’re good, they were taken by Dave. When you look at photos on my blog and they’re, well… just photos, they were taken by me. Here are some snaps Dave took on the street during the first few days of our trip… he has a good eye for what’s cool, no? Like this striking couple. You know that man can’t resist giving that sassy girl... read more

I’ll Take The Stairs: Story in Photos

Our (temporary) apartment in Prague is just off Old Town Square, in a narrow alley with large wooden doors on either end. After midnight, the doors are locked and the alley disappears from view, while we sleep four floors above the cobblestones. Radiating out from the square are the streets that lead to Prague’s other delights: the Charles Bridge and beyond to the castle, side streets that lead to a... read more

Fave Things: Týnská Literární Kavárna

I shouldn’t like this place. It’s somewhat dark. It smells like cigarette smoke. The menu is limited to a few cold meat options (sausages, sardines, cheese), plenty of booze, and hot coffee and tea drinks. But this is one of my favorite places in Prague. It’s tricky to find… you have to circle around the Týn Church and, when you get to the back, remember that it’s not that... read more

Witches’ Night 2013

Tonight is Witches’ Night, or pálení čarodějnic (burning of the witches) in Czech; you can read all about it in this article from The Guardian. We’re just about to take a nap (strolling picturesque squares and eating lunch in a pub can be so tiring!) to get ready for tonight’s festivities: witch parade across the Charles Bridge to Kampa Island, beer and sausage, Roma bands, and a... read more

Grocery Shopping in Prague: A Story in Photos

Note to self: If you want to make deconstructed hamburger salad (p. 38 in Well Fed) with ground beef, it’s best to learn the Czech words for beef and pork before heading out to the Tesco to buy groceries, lest you learn, midway through cooking (thanks, translate.google.com), that the reason your “hamburger” looks so pale isn’t that Czech beef is light-colored but, rather, is... read more

Remember Who You Are

We’re safe and sound in Prague after several airport adventures, involuntary fasting, and jetlag exhaustion; details coming soon. For now, I want to share this super-cute, awesome mural we saw while strolling through the Mala Strana neighborhood of Prague... read more

Where in the World is Mel?

We’re off! Dave and I have packed our bags and are heading over the Atlantic tomorrow for six weeks of adventure. I’ll be blogging, Tweeting, and Facebooking while I’m there, so you can keep up with our shenanigans. Aside from the usual holiday-inspired rest and relaxation while in Prague, we have plans to try kundalini yoga (Czech and Gurmukhi!)… to hit the grocery store and cook... read more

Nothing Matters. Everything Matters.

I’m part of a casual writing group that meets once a month to share our writings on a particular topic. A few months ago, our writing prompt was “travel.” The first thing that came to mind was the incredibly moving, almost transformational, experiences I’ve had in churches, synagogues, and cemeteries on my travel adventures — despite the fact that I’m not at all religious.... read more

Final CrossFit Praha WOD & Prague Dispatch – 10/19/11

Today is our last full day in Prague, then we’re off to Paris tomorrow. It’s bittersweet: Paris will be wonderful, but I’m sad to leave Prague behind (for now). After a glorious day of 60F and clear, sunny skies yesterday, Prague is showing its moodiness — perhaps the city is also sad to see us go? — with cold drizzle. We had to bundle up for our walk to CrossFit Praha, but... read more

CrossFit Praha WOD #3

I just want to go on record as saying that using an alarm clock on vacation is evil. Also evil, Zdenek’s workout today. But first, here’s a look at the CrossFit Praha gym. It’s starting to feel like home, and I’m fighting to avoid thinking about our last workout (for now) there on Wednesday. Here’s the building where CrossFit Praha lives. This is the buzzer on the front door.... read more
