Prague Dispatch – 10/16/11

I just have time for a quick post before I hit the pillow — workout #3 at CrossFit Praha tomorrow. We’ve been enjoying the cool weather and a few days ago, it went from good to perfect: clear blue skies, brilliant sunshine, and daytime temps in the 50s. My favorite weather. After a magical weekend in Cesky Krumlov, we enjoyed a lazy Sunday here in the sunny CZ. After a late breakfast, we spent... read more

A Little Gypsy Music

About 100 miles south of Prague is a small city called Cesky Krumlov that inspires daydreams of princesses and werewolves. The town and castle construction started in the late 13th century, and most of the old town is tucked into a horseshoe of the Vltava River. It looks like this: … and this: … and this. The castle has a drawbridge and a bear pit populated by European brown bears, and on... read more

CrossFit Praha WOD #2

Whew! After gingerbread dumplings and Dacicky Lager for dinner last night, we were moving a little slow this morning. But the alarm said, “Arise, vacationers! And pay your penance.” So we hustled into workout gear, bundled up against the cold rain, and hoofed it the scenic mile — through Wenceslas Square with umbrella-armed locals on their way to work — to CrossFit Praha. The... read more

We took the train to the town of Kutna Hora today to visit the Sedlec Ossuary, a.k.a., the bone church. You should read all about the Ossuary here; it’s fascinating. Rather than being morbid, it was life-affirming and beautiful. Then we wandered around the cobblestones in moody weather and ate one of my favorite meals of my life at the Restaurace Dacicky. Be sure to check out the menu; it’s a... read more

CrossFit Praha WOD #1

This morning Dave and I bought a 10-session punch card for CrossFit Praha, so it’s official: we’ll be working out Mondays and Wednesdays at Zdenek’s box while we’re here. I’ll post photos and a full recap of our awesome experience when I’m back home. The gym space is SO COOL. It’s in the basement of a beautiful old building — nice little courtyard for... read more

The “Burn In Hell, Stalin” WOD

Yesterday, Dave and I hit Letna Park for the first workout of our holiday. I’m pretty crazy about the park because to get to it from the river requires walking (or running) up lots of stairs. I have a predilection for jogging up stairways to see where they lead. This can take us off course (like the first time we ran up to the Castle) and/or introduce us to cool stuff, like the Metronome at the top... read more

Prague Dispatch – 10/09/11

Yesterday, we took the tram (I LOVE riding the tram!) to Expat Expo. We were lucky enough to meet two expats who shared personal info on how they made their transition to Czech life, and we attended a Q&A with a rep from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, so the whole visa process seems less Byzantine. At least for today, the “live in Prague for a few years” adventure seems within... read more

Prague Dispatch – 10/08/11

It’s gray and cool here, and I’m loving it. We enjoyed a brief sunny spell yesterday afternoon, but it was cold enough for me to buy a faux fur hat at H&M (YAY, H&M!). Just about to head out for a run in Letna Park… here are some snaps from yesterday. The bomber hat with fur flaps: The “Euro Foods” cart where we ate a garlicky, luscious “Prague Sausage”... read more

Prague Dispatch – 10/07/11

It’s Friday morning here, and I’ve finally emerged from the jet lag fog. When we arrived in Paris Wednesday morning, we heard the words you least want to hear after a 10-hour trans-Atlantic flight: “I’m sorry. I see no flights to Prague today. There is flight tomorrow – but no flight to Prague today.” It seems our flight had been cancelled, but we hadn’t been... read more

Off To Prague: A Story In Photos (Episode 2)

Last fall, Dave and I took a holiday to Prague and fell madly in love with everything about it. So we’re going back! And we’re leaving in three short days. I never got around to posting photos after our trip last year, so here are some of our 2010 adventures. Today, I’m sharing some food photos from our favorite restaurants, as well as a few snaps that capture the magic of Prague for me.... read more
