In my quest for lean superhero-ness, I’m following the Wendler 5/3/1 strength training program. Twice a week, Dave and I are hitting the craptastic gym in our Converse to lift heavy and crank through a mini-metcon.
My glass is half full.
Something happened in my attitude in the last 24 hours. Maybe it was my follow-up visit to Dr. Sebring. Maybe it was the fact that when I put on my favorite...

Last week, I knocked off work early and spent a few hours with my dear friend Stacey chopping and stirring in a cooking class at Thai Fresh. It’s one of those only-in-Austin places that’s an authentic Thai restaurant attached to Thrice, a super cozy coffee-and-wine bar with wireless and live music (because every coffee and/or wine bar in Austin is pretty...

Seriously, I thought my birthday was a week ago, then I looked at the calendar and realized it’s been two weeks. This is my life right now: time disappears. But stories about books and food are always fun, right? Even when they’re two weeks late. And I have some very sexy books and food to share.
So… here are snaps and stories from my birthday celebration on Tuesday, May 1 when I turned...

From the beach in front of our house, we can look to our left and see the town of Tamarindo. If properly motivated, we can walk along the beach toward Tamarindo and when we arrive at a big bend to the left, we could wave and shout to people across the way. What we cannot do is walk or swim across the estuary — it’s the home of tricky tides and crocodiles. Our options are to take a water taxi — $3...

Of all the wonderful attributes of our trip to Costa Rica — the private beach, the right-outside-our-bedroom pool, the lazy days — we were most excited about the animals. Yes, I had some anxiety about insects (which turned out to be unfounded so far), but I heard tales of monkeys and iguanas in our garden, and I wanted to see them for myself. Dave, showing off with his ability to capture animals and...

Last fall, Dave and I took a holiday to Prague and fell madly in love with everything about it. So we’re going back! And we’re leaving in three short days. I never got around to posting photos after our trip last year, so here are some of our 2010 adventures.
Today, I’m sharing some food photos from our favorite restaurants, as well as a few snaps that capture the magic of Prague for me....

Last fall, Dave and I took a holiday to Prague and fell madly in love with everything about it. So we’re going back! And we’re leaving in five short days.
I never got around to posting photos after our trip last year, so I thought I’d talk about what we’re planning to do this year by showing you some of our 2010 adventures.
Today, I’m sharing some sightseeing and outdoor...

To aid in the quest for superhero body composition, many people I trust recommend occasional sprints, in addition to lifting heavy things and met-cons (and rest/recovery!) Dave and I kinda halfway pinky-swore to do sprints every other Saturday, and this week was our first time. New goal: begun!
We hit Eilers Park here in Austin, the location where I first started my CrossFit adventures at bootcamp. I have...

Three times a week, I go to CrossFit Austin, and I do whatever they tell me to do. As fast as I can.
But twice a week, the barbells are the boss at the South Austin Gym. I pretend to be the boss with my strength training worksheet and my plan for warmup and cash-out, but who am I kidding? The barbells make the rules.
I surprised myself the other when I realized I have a deep affection for the Craptastic,...

This post officially ends my indulgence around my birthday. Today is the kick off another Whole30 clean-up and No TV May, but first: cake!
Dave got me this cake cover for a gift years ago, but yesterday was the first time we’ve had occasion to use it. Cute, right?
This is what was hiding inside.
But before we could eat that, we needed an infusion of protein, in the form of lamb-and-pistachio kebabs...

This morning was the annual Cowboy Breakfast in Austin. It’s the official kickoff of Rodeo Austin, and every year, Dave and I say we want to go… then we forget or I get fussy about eating… and we miss it.
But this year, we decided to find a way to enjoy the fun without dooming our diets. As it turns out, it was super easy and totally fun.
The lesson: if you do your homework and make a...
